SUMMARY:Matthew Whitaker Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Born in 2001\, Matthew Whitaker began playing music at age 3\, after his grandfather gave him a small Yamaha keyboard. At 9\, Matthew began teaching himself how to play the Hammond B3 organ. By the time he was 15\, he was the youngest artist to be endorsed by Hammond in its 80+ year history and the youngest to be named a Yamaha Artist\, taking his place among stellar jazz pianists. \n“He’s extraordinary\,” American Idol music director and recording producer Ray Chew says of Matthew. “And you don’t want to put an asterisk next to it. He’s not extraordinary because he’s blind. He’s extraordinary because he’s extraordinary” (USA Today). “His approach to jazz is that of a distinctive soul…He’s immersed in the energy and spirit of the music he loves and lives to play” (The Miami Times). \n”The fleetness of finger\, the touch and taste\, the grit and grime when he needs it\, the lightness and airiness when it’s called upon — Whitaker has it all” (DownBeat). He has performed at major venues and festivals in the US\, Europe\, Asia and Australia. His television appearances include Fox TV’s Showtime at the Apollo\, the Today show\, Ellen\, and a 2020 segment on CBS’s 60 Minutes. \n“Matthew Whitaker is music. To see and hear him play is to know that divine talent exists. Beyond his innate musical abilities is a sheer joy and passion to create music” (Monifa Brown\, WGBO).

SUMMARY:Gunnar Idenstam\, organ Erik Rydvall\, nyckelharpa
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk\nPre-concert Talk with Alan Morrison on stage at 2:15pm. \nSpivey Hall’s organist in residence Alan Morrison gives engaging\, insightful talks about the music. These talks begin forty-five prior to concert time for selected Organ series concerts and are free for all ticket-holders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\nSwedish organist Gunnar Idenstam “is one of the most talented organists on the international concert scene” (Corriere del Ticino). His improvisations “occupy their own universe – part hard apocalyptic rock\, part elfin folklore\, part nave-shaking French symphony” (Gramophone)\, but “in such a convincing way\, that you cannot talk about the crossover music of classical and pop\, but more about a kind of music that… unfolds in its own beauty” (Nord West Zeitung). \nAmong the foremost Swedish folk musicians of his generation\, Erik Rydvall began playing the violin at age 5 and discovered at age 18 the nyckelharpa – a traditional string instrument for popular dance and festive music\, played with a bow\, using a key box to determine the pitch of melody and bass strings. A set of resonating sympathetic strings adds to its characteristic sound. “What is evident is both its variety of sound and virtuoso possibilities” (MusicWeb International). \n  \nNyckelharpa and pipe organ are “a thoroughly delightful pairing… both Rydvall and Idenstam are also past masters of the sort of improvisational give-and-take that that music ‘created in the moment’ requires…as enjoyable as it is completely surprising” (Fanfare). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\nConcert Program\nSelections from the artists’ 2019 Toccata Next CD release\, Northern Dances: Folk Music from Scandinavia and Estonia\, and solo organ works.
