SUMMARY:Gunnar Idenstam\, organ Erik Rydvall\, nyckelharpa
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk\nPre-concert Talk with Alan Morrison on stage at 2:15pm. \nSpivey Hall’s organist in residence Alan Morrison gives engaging\, insightful talks about the music. These talks begin forty-five prior to concert time for selected Organ series concerts and are free for all ticket-holders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\nSwedish organist Gunnar Idenstam “is one of the most talented organists on the international concert scene” (Corriere del Ticino). His improvisations “occupy their own universe – part hard apocalyptic rock\, part elfin folklore\, part nave-shaking French symphony” (Gramophone)\, but “in such a convincing way\, that you cannot talk about the crossover music of classical and pop\, but more about a kind of music that… unfolds in its own beauty” (Nord West Zeitung). \nAmong the foremost Swedish folk musicians of his generation\, Erik Rydvall began playing the violin at age 5 and discovered at age 18 the nyckelharpa – a traditional string instrument for popular dance and festive music\, played with a bow\, using a key box to determine the pitch of melody and bass strings. A set of resonating sympathetic strings adds to its characteristic sound. “What is evident is both its variety of sound and virtuoso possibilities” (MusicWeb International). \n  \nNyckelharpa and pipe organ are “a thoroughly delightful pairing… both Rydvall and Idenstam are also past masters of the sort of improvisational give-and-take that that music ‘created in the moment’ requires…as enjoyable as it is completely surprising” (Fanfare). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\nConcert Program\nSelections from the artists’ 2019 Toccata Next CD release\, Northern Dances: Folk Music from Scandinavia and Estonia\, and solo organ works.

SUMMARY:Merz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Brigid Coleridge\, violin\nJulia Yang\, cello\nLee Dionne\, piano \n“The incredibly gifted\, innovative\, and charming Merz Trio” (CutCommon) made a sweep of recent U.S. chamber awards\, taking top prizes at the 2021 Naumburg\, 2019 Concert Artists Guild\, 2019 Fischoff\, and 2018 Chesapeake competitions. \n“The playing of this young trio\, both precise and evocative\, promises much for the future” (AllMusic.com). As well\, the Trio takes an innovative approach to concert programming and presentation that places them “in a realm of high artistry” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer). \nThe Merz Trio\, previously in residence at the New England Conservatory of Music\, possesses “both distinctiveness and subtlety of interpretation\, which is a rare combination\, [plus] developed and distinctive taste – likewise rare” (Hudson Review). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXTRAS\n\n\n\n\nPre-concert Talk\nPre-concert Talk one hour before performance at 2pm. \nClayton State music professor Dr.Kurt-Alexander Zeller gives engaging\, insightful talks about the music\, and often plays recorded excerpts of pieces in the program.
