Stitching Our Story: A Celebration of Black History Quilt Show Positively Impacts Clayton County, GA

Every stitch tells a story. Every pattern holds a legacy.

This past February, Clayton County came together to celebrate Black history, Black excellence, and Black resilience — not just in words, but woven into the very fabric of our community. The Stitching Our Story: A Celebration of Black History Quilt Show brought visitors, history lovers, HBCU alumni, and community members to Jonesboro, GA for a month-long experience they won’t soon forget.

Here’s a look at what made this exhibit so special — and the lasting impact it had on our visitors and our county.

What Was the Stitching Our Story Quilt Show?

The Stitching Our Story quilt show was a public, free-to-attend exhibition open throughout the entire month of February 2025 in celebration of Black History Month. Hosted at Arts Clayton Gallery in Jonesboro, GA, the show was brought to life through a collaboration between See Clayton County GA and the City of Jonesboro, GA.

The exhibit honored the deep cultural significance of quilts in African American history. Quilts have long served as more than bedcovers — they are records of lineage, acts of resistance, and expressions of creativity passed down through generations. Seeing them displayed with care and reverence in the heart of Clayton County gave that history a powerful, tangible presence.

“Quilts have always been more than blankets. They are maps of memory, voices stitched in silence, and testaments to a people who turned necessity into art.”

How the Exhibit Impacted Visitors

The community response was overwhelming. Visitors from across the metro Atlanta region — and well beyond — walked through the gallery doors and left visibly moved.

For many, the exhibit did more than educate. It inspired. It uplifted. Seeing Black history reflected with dignity, artistry, and intention gave visitors a renewed sense of pride and belonging — a reminder that their story is worth telling and worth preserving.

The exhibit also gave visitors a reason to stay longer in Clayton County. Rather than a single stop, guests were encouraged to turn their visit into a full cultural experience by exploring everything our county has to offer.

Celebrating Black Excellence: HBCUs and the Divine Nine

One of the most exciting elements of this initiative was our special invitation to HBCU students, alumni, and members of the Divine Nine Greek-letter organizations to attend.

HBCU and Black Greek Letter Organizations proudly displayed by our visitors.

The energy across every tour stop was electric. Every aspect created a powerful sense of continuity. The past and the present were in conversation, and it was beautiful.

This was more than a history exhibit. It was a celebration of Black joy, Black pride, and Black community in full bloom.

Supporting Clayton County’s Local Economy

The cultural impact of our Black History initiative went hand in hand with our local economy.

Visitors who came for the quilt show stayed to explore. They dined at local restaurants, shopped at small businesses, and discovered the many gems Clayton County has to offer. Many of those businesses are Black-owned, making every dollar spent a direct investment in the community whose history was being celebrated.

Cultural tourism — done right — strengthens neighborhoods, supports entrepreneurs, and builds the kind of community pride that keeps people coming back. This exhibit was a perfect example of that in action.
