Beyond the Founding Story: Indigenous Histories, Archives, and Memory

Discover the stories, perspectives, and historical records that help preserve Native American heritage at the 2026 American Indian Heritage Symposium, hosted by the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Clayton County, GA.

This free, public event invites history enthusiasts, cultural explorers, and curious visitors to explore how Indigenous histories have been documented, represented, and preserved across generations.

This year’s symposium features presentations from Hannah Jancosko and Desiree Billie of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida’s Archives, Libraries, & Museums Department. They’ll share insights into the Tribe’s history, the development of its archives, and the importance of preserving Indigenous stories through Native perspectives.

Dr. Matthew Sparacio of Georgia State University will also explore how early American almanacs influenced perceptions of Native Americans and westward expansion, as well as how Native nations used these publications to share their own narratives.

Whether you’re passionate about history or interested in discovering new cultural perspectives, this symposium offers an opportunity to learn, reflect, and engage with Indigenous heritage.
