Meet Michelle Curney Willis, a master quilt artist and third-generation quilter whose work is deeply rooted in legacy, faith, and storytelling. With more than 27 years of quilting experience, Michelle was introduced to the art form by both her paternal grandmother, the late Lois Howard Jefferson, and her maternal grandmomma, the late Earlie Mae Curney—continuing a family tradition stitched across generations.

Michelle not only creates quilts but also teaches and speaks about quilting, sharing its power as both art and expression. One of her most meaningful moments came when a woman with significant hearing loss shared that, while she couldn’t hear the worship service in her church, she could still “worship” through the beauty of Michelle’s quilt hanging in the sanctuary. It’s moments like these that speak to the emotional and spiritual impact of her work.

Her featured pieces, African Girls – Series and She Gave Us Black Gold, reflect her love for the full quilting process—from selecting and cutting fabrics to piecing and especially quilting them together—bringing stories, heritage, and reverence to life through every stitch.
