We Are Water Weekend at Newman Wetlands Center
Dates: February 7–8, 2026
Location: Newman Wetlands Center, 2755 Freeman Road, Hampton, GA 30228

Sponsored by See Clayton County GA in partnership with Newman Wetlands Center, We Are Water Weekend is a multi-activity celebration of our connection to water, nature, and community. Over two days, participants will engage in outdoor experiences, educational programs, and expert-led activities that highlight water’s vital role in our ecosystems, culture, and daily life. Registration is required for each activity.

Weekend Program Highlights:

Saturday, February 7
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.Mother: Sisterhood in the Wild Screening and Panel
Start with a brunch provided by Sumthin’ Fa Brunch, followed by a screening of Mother: Sisterhood in the Wild, an emotional documentary set in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A panel discussion will feature filmmaker Chad Brown and cast members Danica Carey and Erica Nelson. Register Here!

2:00 – 5:00 p.m.Introduction to Kayaking
Learn paddling basics on Shamrock Reservoir with experienced guides from Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions. Kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are provided; participants should bring sun protection, water, and weather-appropriate gear. Register Here!

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.Camping Cuisine Demo
Outdoor culinary enthusiasts Nick and Amanda Brooks of Outdoor Gear and Beer will demonstrate cooking techniques and share a dinner on the shore of Blalock Reservoir — perfect for novice and experienced campers alike. Register Here!

Sunday, February 8
6:45 – 8:30 a.m.Sunrise with the Blackbirds
Observe as hundreds of thousands of Blackbirds and waterfowl take flight at dawn over the CCWA treatment wetlands. Guided by conservation staff, participants will explore by foot and vehicle, with chances to see Bald Eagles, Great Egrets, and even otters. Register Here!

9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.Fly Fishing Casting Instructional
Captain Chris Scalley of River Through Atlanta leads this instructional class on fly-casting techniques at Blalock Reservoir. This session focuses on skill development rather than fishing itself. Register Here!

1:30 – 4:00 p.m.From Spring to River Bus Tour
Hannah Palmer, author, science communicator, and creator of Finding the Flint will lead a bus tour through key water-related sites in Clayton County, exploring historical and natural landmarks, including the Flint River watershed. Participants should plan for outdoor conditions and wear closed-toed shoes. Register Here!
